About Project

Mindful of the fact that the Nigerian Government has been hammering on the need for private sectors and organization to help in creating jobs for the idle teeming youths, the Ladies of St. Mulumba (LSM) Nigeria tries to contribute her small quota and so decided to wade into ventures that would empower women and youths. To this effect, they have built and commissioned a three-storeyed complex at Owerri mainly for skill acquisition for women and youths, hence the Owerri Complex is called “Women and Youth Empowerment Centre, Owerri (WAYECO).

WAYECO is situated at Plot P/6, Area A, World Bank Housing Estate Owerri, Imo State.

The (WAYECO) Complex houses 31 (thirty-one) rooms built-in suites, classrooms, a hall, for conferences and seminars, a big kitchen refectory etc. The rooms are well furnished and can accommodate 62 trainees at a time.

The complex has open space for recreational facilities:

Some of the objectives for embarking on this project include the following:

  • removing the youths from the streets and providing them with economic, material and physical security.
  • restoring the lost self-esteem of our women and youth by promoting and upholding their dignity as Nigerians.
  • teaching youths and women skills and by so doing empowering them economically for self-reliance and sustenance.
  • providing traumatize youths and women some funds and equipment for practising whatever skills they would acquire in the Centre.
  • Offering counselling facilities to the youths who may need them for responsible living, especially those who were involved in anti-social behaviours and also help them discover their potential,
  • providing funds for graduates of the Centre to start off some skill.

Project Result & Benefits of Project

Since the commissioning of the Centre, on 12th May 2017 the Ladies have empowered over 250 women and 500 youths.

Funds have been made available to the beneficiaries to start their various trades. Reports show that those empowered are doing very well in their various endeavours.

Workshops have been held, where youths and women were counselled and talks were given on such themes as discovering your potential; Doing it yourself; The need for discipline, and Farming: a great opportunity.

Resource persons were drawn from the Universities and Polytechnics.
