Our History

The Ladies of St. Mulumba, Nigeria is the Association of the Wives and Widows of the Knights of the Noble Order of St. Mulumba, Nigeria. The Knights of St. Mulumba is a fraternal benefit Order of Catholic men. It was founded by the late Monk Anselem Abraham Ojefua.

He also founded two monasteries one at Awhum, Enugu State, and the other at Illa in Delta State, his hometown. The order is named after St. Mulumba, one of the great martyrs of Uganda, Mathias Kalemba, who was the Mulumba of the King of Uganda. As a devout, ardent, and militant Catholic, he willingly, courageously, and cheerfully laid down his life in the most excruciating form of death on May 27th, 1886 rather than renounce his faith during the historical persecution of Christians in the kingdom.

It is therefore, to honour such a great African defender of the faith, help immortalize his name, and emulate his good examples, that the founding fathers chose him as the patron Saint of the order which was founded in October, 1953 in Nigeria.

Our Origin

The Ladies of St. Mulumba were operating independently in their various zones under different names, but in 1978, by the grace of the Almighty God and the request of the Founder, the Late Monk Ofefua, they were organized nationally with the name Ladies of St. Mulumba Nigeria (LSM).

The organization was formally inaugurated at the Pastoral Institute, Ibadan, Oyo State, on the 18th day of March 1978, under the guidance of His Lordship, Rt. Rev. Dr. Felix Job, Bishop of Ibadan, the then Supreme Knight of the order of St. Mulumba, Nigeria, Mr. D.E.A. da Silva of Ibadan Sub-Council, and the Grand Knights who came from other Sub-Councils.

The pioneer thirteen Sub-Councils of the Order then, during the inaugural meeting, includes Asaba, Benin, Calabar, Enugu, Ibadan, Ishan, Jos, Kaduna, Lagos, Onitsha, Owerri, Umuahia, and Warri.

It is of interest to note that since the inception of the association some 3 years ago, the number of sub-Ordinate Councils has risen from thirteen to two hundred and fifty.
